Handle with Care–Living with Sensitivities



What started out as a curse at around the age of 28 when I developed sensitivities to just about everything, I now see that period of my life as the launch to spiritual awakening…

When I first started suffering from multiple chemical sensitivities and other allergies, I thought it was the end of the world. Surely, I wasn’t able to work a regular job any longer, relationships were out of the question, and my music career eventually bit the dust too. As I holed myself up in a Queen Anne apartment in Seattle, I had thought of taking my life many times.

But I endured the isolation for years, I studied various spiritual tools and practices and I started noticing that others were awakening too–maybe not in my neighborhood but across the globe or across town. Thanks the internet, I discovered other sensitives who were embarking into new careers usually with energy medicine and healing their sensitivities or learning how to live with them in a balanced way.

Now, sensitivities were no longer a burden, but an asset as more and more people began the awakening process. What was happening to me in my 20s was the beginning of an awakening process and I did grow more wise in the process. I changed my diet drastically numerous times, began wearing natural fibers and tuning into Gaia because I felt deeply connected to the earth. I grew sensitive to the earth’s magic and energetic fields which I would have never done had I not grown more sensitive.

I saw a video recently in which the host said that as we open our Third Eye (I guess mine must be open), we become increasingly sensitive, especially to our environment and foods we eat. We no longer choose to hang out in crowds, shop in malls or shopping centers, us commercial cleaning products in our home and maybe we choose to work from home to avoid office gossip and negative bosses. We stay away from bars and give up alcohol, caffeine and sugar.

I don’t know the number of people who will develop sensitivities in their lifetime this time around. But I know children born now and in recent decades have built-in sensitivities, especially to violence and tension. But this doesn’t mean they don’t act out in violence or watch violent videos since an imbalance can swing the other way too. But it’s best not to expose children to violence since it could easily turn into an addiction to everyone’s detriment.

We come from cultures that desensitize us through the media and our interaction with other desensitized people, but it’s not healthy to detach from emotions and feelings or sensations in the body. Some people swear that they have no sensitivities but suffer from allergies or immune dysfunction so I beg to differ. Perhaps those numerous colds are really allergies to the environment and not a virus at all.

As we grow more sensitive we also gather strength and courage to set boundaries with others. We require more space to breathe and clean air to breathe along with pure water to drink. We realize that we are deserving of a pollution-free world and make efforts in that direction. We also get in touch with our bodies and that’s a good thing.
