Similar to other bloggers, I have been focusing too heavily on the types of people and relationships that I don’t want in my life. And while I have learned a lot from attracting or aligning with unwanted situations, in 2017, I want to focus more on wanted things. So to launch this new mission, I’m including a post here on true friends.
As hard as it is, let’s try to focus on the supportive, kind, and loving people in our lives. The ones that don’t disappear when the chips are down. The ones that still love us after we lose a job, a spouse, a child, or a home. Let’s focus on the people who always offer us a couch to sleep on when we are destitute or a shoulder to cry on when we fall into despair and grief.
In my own grief and angst during the past several years, I have said to many times that I don’t have any friends. While this felt true at the times I uttered those words, I can see in retrospect that I have many friends. Not everyone is out to get a part of me. And while many people only helped me so they could siphon off my life energy, I have also experienced true friendships with people who bolstered my confidence and went out on a limb for me even when I felt I didn’t deserve their kindness. Haven’t we all been there?
This time of year, we watch the American classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life”. And we do so to remind us that even in our deepest despair, there is always someone around who feels that we made a difference in their life. And the sentiments of this movie also remind us that each one of us is an angel for someone else, especially when we stop feeling sorry for ourselves and reach out to another. And when I say reach out to another, I’m talking about someone who genuinely appreciates our support and uses the leg up, rather than sucking us dry.
So as a reminder, here are a few qualities we find in true friends.
- They look us in the eye and reflect tenderness and compassion to us.
- A true friend doesn’t abandon us during our failures or during our successes.
- A true friend breaks bread or shares food with us (or other things).
- A true friend cares about and honors our well-being.
- A true friend follows through with actions and their words are worth their weight in gold.
- A true friend values the time they spend with us.
- A true friend is someone we long to spend time with because we value them.
- A true friend is someone we will fight to protect.
- A true friend never gossips and reveals our secrets to others.
- A true friend won’t allow us to sleep on the street, ever.
Who are the true friends in your life? How can you support and give them love in return? Spend time with this valuable person and don’t forget to tell him or her often how much you appreciate having them in your life.
I give a shout out to my true friends, “I love you, all!”
